Student Room

This is a room available to all student registrants of the congress where you can meet-up, visit, and participate in student-specific activities throughout the week.

It is Meeting Room 10.

Some activities are already planned and others will develop during the congress. Read below for the pre-planned activites and check out the room itself to stay apprised of new details.

Cultural Adaptation, Competence, and Humility:
Perspectives on the Future of Music Therapy

This presentation will offer two perspectives on the theory and practice of cultural adaptation, competence, and humility for students who are soon entering the field of music therapy.  How can students best prepare to work with clients from a diverse array of backgrounds, cultures, and experience?  How can students broaden their musical offerings to appreciate, but not appropriate, cultures outside of their own?

Pre-Congress Networking Event for Students

During this networking event, students will get the chance to meet music therapy students from around the world. A welcoming atmosphere will include ice-breaker activities specially designed for you to get to know music therapy students from different parts of the world. We hope this event will provide students with an opportunity to make new friendships, and meet “conference buddies”.

Lunchtime Jam Session

Facilitated by Certified Music Therapist (MTA) Méliane Laurier-Cromp will share a French-Canadian pop song with students, discussing Québecoise elements of the song and helping the students to learn it.

Once learned, the students will improvise on the song together.
Some instruments will be provided, students are welcome to bring their own traditional instruments to the jam session as well.

Méliane is a francophone, Certified Music Therapist (MTA) who sits on the WCMT2023 Planning Committee and will lead the facilitated Jam Session for the student delegates. She a skilled music therapist who graduated from Concordia University in 2011 and she previously completed a Masters in Music in Theory at McGill, which focused on Québécois identity in pop music. Méliane works in social paediatrics in Laval, QC and has a private practice in Deux-Montagnes, QC.

Student Room Meet-ups

Professional Music Therapists will be invited to spend break-times in the student room to participate in an informal information session, according to the professionals’ areas of interest.
